DOWNLANDS VS BARNARDS CASTLE 31.07.2008 IN TOOWOOMBA ADDED SATURDAY 02/08/2008 It's one of the annual events that brings people from all over back to Toowoomba to view the much heralded clash between TGS and Downlands, for the coveted (isn't that an over used word, but I'll use it anyway) O'Callaghan Cup, one of those traditional games played out on the escarpment each year when TGS has it's bye in the GPS calendar. Taxis are busy, and no doubt some local hotels get really busy, as the social get together sees men become legends, more legendary as they get older. The older we get the better we were syndrome. It all adds to the occasion though, and it is a crowd pulling occasion that is probably only rivaled by the two St Josephs Colleges, Gregory Terrace and Nudgee getting together for their annual playoff, and the big clash in Sydney between the two schools with views, Riverview College and St Josephs at Hunters Hill. Downlands hold the money from last year, but I really think TGS are playing better rugby than they were in 2007, under new coach Peter Bromley, a very good rugby coach. While Downlands are probably not playing as well as they did in 2007, this one may come down to the coaches. Old coach Peter Healy is himself on wily old character, with more tricks up his sleeve than any magician. If there is any one single person that can motivate these young blokes to play one game, this game on emotion, Pete Healy will be that man. That can't be questioned. The fact that the game will be played on Downlands soil will also provide further advantage for the Griffins. On form, TGS would have to enter the game favourites, but rugby, like Toowoomba weather, is a funny thing. The under ages provide some great looking match ups too, from 13's to 16's look like really good clashes, with both schools fielding good sides in those age groups, sides that have been really competitive with the big schools in Brisbane. Good luck to all participants this weekend.
