NUDGEE VS STATE HIGH, AT NUDGEE, 10/05/2008 ADDED SUNDAY 11/05/2008
State High go close to the upset of the year, leading 12 to 3 at half time and losing at the end by 15 to 12. I wasn't there, but got the score through a while back. I am sure there will be more to follow. I hear the NC vs BSHS game was a very physical battle. Other results, Churchie, about 39 or something to nil over Downlands, and as yet unconfirmed, TSS 22 over TGS 3, but as I say, unconfirmed. All of the scores except the State High score are still as at this moment, 5:00pm Sunday 11/05/2008 unconfirmed. A very good source did give them to me but I was lying on the couch without a pen, and my mind is like a sieve these days, so I think that is what he said. I guess though that all games except maybe that State High one may have gone as expected, maybe. Scores though only tell part of the story. The game up at Nudgee was much closer than those scores even come close to telling. Many, many people had written the BSHS side off in 2008 after many great schoolboy footballers moved onto adult life, remember guys like Matt To'omua, Brent Hamlin, Willie Tupou, Paul and Victor Mafi? Nudgee's losses did not seem to compare with those of State High, the most notable being James O'Connor, and probably Gus Leahy. From the things I have heard, State High lead 12 to 3 at the break, but had the wind in the first half. I also hear that they were very unlucky not to be leading 17 or 19 to 3 at the break or into the second half, with a ball dropped and the line open. Nudgee have obviously come back during the second stanza and I believe scored a converted try with about a minute and a half to go, to go out to 15 to 12. State high have received a penalty right from the kick off, and it was time, so no kick out for a lineout, Matt Garland was to have a shot. Everybody thought it had gone over, including the State High boys, but it had just scraped under the cross bar. I hear a very, very physical match up, with plenty of injuries, three to State High's potent ball carrying forwards. As I wasn't at the game, or at any game, it will all be a bit dull this week, I have a picture of a country Qld sunset, it was brilliant in itself if anyone wants to see it, but no footy.
On the Nudgee, State High Game.
State High had two opportunities in Nudgee's Half and scored on both occasions. Nudgee had about 70% of the ball and really struggled to put points on. Had alot of fancy back line moves that really didn’t do to much to stretch or break the state high defence. State High showed a lot of spirit in defending their try line for most of the 2nd half. No doubt in my mind State High would have run riot, if they saw the amount of ball Nudgee had. State High - 6. David (Feao)- Saw little ball but was damaging when he had the ball, also put some strong hits on in defence. 4 and 5. Coffee and Quirky. very very good all over the park in just about every ruck. Very strong in the line out 10. Big shoes to fill with To'omua leaving. (My suggestion will be that MT's shoes will remain unfilled, and this new BSHS 10 will develop something different. It is rare to find a boy (MT) that plays like a man, kicks, passes, thinks, so don't expect another MT to just appear, guys will be good, but they won't be him.) Didn’t really give any great balls to find Joel. Watch for a guy called Shane to fill this position out injured at this point in time. He made opens combined states last year. 12. Chanel - shut down Stef. --- had no time with the ball. Though Stef looked off on the day Chanel did a great job. 13. Joel - beating them on the outside many a time in defence. Didn’t see any ball in space. Though made one break in the 2nd half, only to see his efforts not rewarded when the ball was dropped over the line. 15. Tony Bartley. Very good at the back in defence a couple of try savers. Strong in returning the pill. Nudgee
9. Very good pass on him. and when he ran the ball was also very elusive. (I'll go with Sam Grasso, I think, ed!) 10. Quiet game, did score the winning try. 11. or 14. one of the Nudgee wingers (on the right hand side) was very destructive when returning the ball though. 12. Stef didn't get too many opportunities. Hardly touched the ball. Very quiet compared to the game last year where he tore the State High backline apart. (Again, a good defence will limit the opportunities of key players, so BSHS must have defended up on Stef pretty well, ed!) 15. Eli Bailey fast and strong good kick on him. had a very impressive game.
For Nudgee being the so called "red hot" favourites they really didn’t seem to offer that much this particular May afternoon. I don’t know which teams will be good this year, but if they come up against a quality side Nudgee are certainly very beatable.
