ADDED FRIDAY 29/02/2008 I was chatting with a New Zealand friend on Wednesday evening, and this guy attended the Hurricanes vs Reds match in the Shaky Isles. I find this guy to be a very fair man in his comments, and while his comments will no doubt upset many readers, I feel duty bound to share them. He felt that the Reds looked to be a team or group of guys just trying to stay uninjured and last the distance, and save themselves through the season to ensure match payments. I guess that is always in people's minds, but while maximizing earning under the current payment structure they also have to maintain and theoretically increase their worth over time, whatever the payment structure. It would be sad if that was truly the case, but maybe rugby is still yet coming to terms with professionalism, it doesn't come over night. I have heard some other very disturbing stuff but if I share it and I am wrong, the likelihood is that I will have to engage my very astute lawyer, and I am trying to leave him alone in 2008! If what I heard is true, then the Reds indeed have some very deep seated issues that need to be forced away, we will just have to watch this one. |
