ROUND 8 GPS FOOTY, 25/07/2009 Written Sunday 26/07/2009 NC 43 df GT 15 ACGS 44 df TGS 13 BSHS 102 df BGS 0 TSS 29 df BBC 13 NC vs GT Another pleasant day in North Brisbane yesterday, although there was a strong wind/breeze, and there was the promise, that was definitely fulfilled, of car parking nightmares. Nudgee was a gridlock for an hour or so after the main game. I spent that much time in the Nudgee traffic nightmare that I had three quarters of a tank and my low fuel light was going off, very confused computer. Plenty of people asking me what is going on with the website, simple answer, my perverse and off the wall sense of humour. A devotee of styles like, the Big Gig, Roy and HG, the Monty Python series, Hey Hey it's Saturday, and today, guys like Carl Barron, I like very much to be a non conformist. Not much better than the John Eales guide of "How to Castrate a horse" by Roy and HG for example. Heavyweight Nude Tallow Wrestling, well there will be more on another page, and just where it came from, but plenty of interest yesterday. Anyway, back to the footy. The observant one in me noted early, that the Nudgee folk had painted the already bright green grass in the in goal areas, another shade of green. I was also offered, as I usually am by my Nudgee friends, a trip to the chapel where they could watch the holy water burn holes in me. Sorry guys, declined as always, I am frightened of places like that and stuff like that, along with daylight, and wooden stakes through the heart, all that sort of stuff, I stay away from it. Terrace started into the stiff breeze, and started well, applied all the pressure and scored first. Were in front 8 to 7 until almost half time, and a spirit breaking try took Nudgee to 14 to 8 on the cusp of half time. There were some around me that thought Terrace could bring this home with the breeze, however it wasn't to be the case. The second half was pretty much all Nudgee, nailing down tries at regular intervals. Their lineout was huge, Postal and Tweedy were heavily dominant, Terrace would have only won a couple of their own throw. Even with Postal in the sin bin, Terrace still threw seemingly to Nudgee's next strength. In reality, their lineout copped a bath. Nudgee will certainly up the ante on State High in the lineout next week. However, State High have played for years without a dominant lineout, and I doubt this will trouble them too much in the leadup. Hymel Hunt certainly straightened the attack for Nudgee and made some good breaks with deft footwork in the midfield, however, again, State High offer a much more formidable midfield defence than Terrace. Postal was huge, a physical presence and just dominant at the lineout. The two props for Nudgee carried the footy very well, and did alot of damage in the early channels. In fact it was a prop try scoring feast, I think. Tweedy was also good, and up against Gill. Beston field for Nudgee though was Joel or Jake Milne, my style of 10, driving the team around the field with clever use of the footy off the boot, didn't do much wrong. Has a full bag of tricks, run, pass and kick. His influence on the game allowed others like Postal to become an influence, territory and then quality possession in that territory in a very traditional style of rugby. For Terrace, Gill was as huge a presence at the breakdown as Postal was at the lineout, Terrace were just unable to build anything for sustained periods. Lucas at 10 was solid, but I really liked the fullback, a Lachlan Maranta, a well built athlete, broke lots of tackles, carried the footy well, and was safe at the back. Young Lucas as I said was solid, thought the shorter kick in behind might have served him better in the second half, with the chase of course. Different game next week, I am sure it will be physical, there won't be the easy metres through the middle, in the early channels for the big Nudgee men, and it is a far different style of rugby the lads from South Brisbane play, blink and they score. The day should be a fabulous spectacle, some great rugby on the cards for sure as alot of these boys play their last games for the school. I am looking forward to it, that's for sure, probably more than any other game throughout the year, but the coaches of each side, quite professionally silence me every time I bring it up, they are right of course, but I don't need to worry about week to week, I can just look ahead and dream.
