MUMS, DADS AND INSURANCE
COMPANIES
written Monday 27/11/2006
They say games get
softer because mothers influence the way games are structured, contact
games, because they control the destiny of where and what sport their
sons play. This may or may not be the case, but I have seen more
soft and lily livered fathers in my time than mothers, fathers that
will happily relate the story of how in a 4th grade match they got stood on
and didn't like it and have been writing letters to various committees an
influential people all over the shop.
They were probably
made play the game, didn't really want to, got beaten up a
couple of times, and now hold a resolve to turn contact sports in
something that only resembles contact sports.
Well these guys are
now lawyers, doctors and head up insurance companies, places
where they can exert great influence on how games and laws are structured.
We must have more of them in rugby because the game and it's players are
becoming soft at an alarming rate. Don't get me wrong, I'm all
for safety, but we are involved in a contact sport, with
inherent risks and dangers and those risks and dangers need to be accepted
and managed.
Maybe the stats will
tell you that mums have the greatest influence, maybe at the end of
the day they do, but I see women as being far mentally tougher than
men, overall.
That's my spin on it
anyway.
